Das Buch nahm eine Schiffskatastrophe vorweg, die sich am 14. April 1912 ereignete, der Untergang der “Titanic”. Hauptmann schrieb damit nicht nur einen spannenden “Katastrophen-Thriller”. Mit “Atlantis” wies er auf die Gefahren der damaligen Technikgläubigkeit hin.

The book anticipates a maritime disaster that occurred on April 14, 1912, the sinking of the "Titanic". Hauptmann wrote thus not only as an exciting "disaster thriller". With "Atlantis", he pointed out the dangers of that faith in technology.
